In his advocacy work, he often invoked his own prison experiences, but he never mentioned being raped. Then again, according to his lawyer, he never even told his wife. The one person I spoke to who did get an inkling was his friend Ferris Marone. Friedmann, he said, told him about being abused in prison. He didn’t mention rape, Marone told me, but “sometimes he would slip up and say it was sexual abuse.”
